Spandex - The Miracle Fiber

Spandex is one of the revolutionary materials discovered in the 20th century. It was first discovered in 1959 by the chemist Joseph Shivers at the DuPont's Benger Laboratory. The word spandex is an anagram of the word 'expands'. Spandex is the preferred name in the United States and is known as Lycra and elastane in Europe and other parts on the world. Spandex is a great substitute for rubber in clothing since it can take more stress and tension and then return to its original shape. Clothes made from spandex are more comfortable even though they are tight. It is much lighter than natural rubber and also easier on the skin.

There are four different methods to produce spandex. Of these the dry spinning method is used to produce over 94% of the spandex fibers created in the world. Spandex has come and gone out of fashion over the years in various forms. For example, spandex jeans were very popular in the 1980's. Spandex has been the material of choice for sport garments since its discovery. Here are some of the major uses of spandex.

Spandex is quite popular in science fiction as well. Characters from comic books are all dressed in spandex costumes. Spandex was thought to be the material of the future and so all stories and comics featuring future storylines dressed their characters in spandex garments.

The versatility and strength of this fabric means it can be used for a variety of purposes. One of the most common applications of this material is exercise shorts. They are probably popular because they allow the body to breath and the muscles to expand and contract during the workout. Another reason is probably because it allows you observe the muscle during the workout and get egged on by the sight of it.

When choosing spandex garments there are few things you need to keep in mind. First is the purpose of the garment. For example, if you are looking for a pair of running pants then you need to decide between the tight and loose variety. The tight ones are great for cold days and short runs as they keep you warm while the more baggy variety is great for warm and mild days.
