Spandex is one of the revolutionary materials discovered in the 20th century. It was first discovered in 1959 by the chemist Joseph Shivers at the DuPont's Benger Laboratory. The word spandex is an anagram of the word 'expands'. Spandex is the preferred name in the United States and is known as Lycra and elastane in Europe and other parts on the world.
