When you receive an invitation to a summer wedding, your first thought is probably, "Ah, look who's getting married." But if you're like most people, your second thought is going to be "What am I going to wear?" That's a question that puzzles people even more than what present to give the bride and groom. Well, relax. Thanks to our fashion school experts, these simple rules for summer wedding attire will have you sitting pretty on the big day.
DO: Take a cue from the invitation. The time of day and the venue will give you a clue as to how casual or formal the wedding is. Morning and afternoon weddings are more casual, and evening weddings are considered dressier affairs. You'll also be more dressed up for a church wedding than one on the beach.

DON'T: Confuse a casual wedding with dressing casually. A casual wedding just means the wedding doesn't require formal attire. You still need to dress up. It's the perfect opportunity for you to wear that adorable sundress, shirtdress or wrap dress you've had in the closet. A loose, unstructured suit would also fit the occasion quite nicely. Also, go for fabrics like cotton and linen to help you stay cool. Surprisingly, not all venues have air conditioning.

DO: Wear bright colors and florals. Summer weddings naturally have a more festive atmosphere, so colors and florals fit right in. Yellows, pinks, and oranges are taking the fashion design world by storm, and these happy colors will look great in all the wedding photos. If you're shy about wearing bright colors and florals, consider mixing them with neutrals like grey or brown.
DON'T: Wear high heels. We know you look great in your stilettos. But they don't work in summer weddings. Your heels will get stuck in the ground if you're on a lawn. Patios have uneven surfaces that aren't kind to high heels. And you'll be wobbly - and achy - on the dance floor. Fashion school experts recommend flats, strappy sandals, or shoes with solid wedge heels if you're looking for a little more height.
DO: Bring layers. It may be sweltering in the afternoon, but evening receptions can get quite chilly. By bringing a jacket or sweater, you know you'll have a cute little something you can put on that will match the rest of your outfit a lot better than the sport coat of some guy at your table. (On second thought, keep your jacket in the car, just in case the guy is cute.)
DON'T: Outshine the bride. Remember, the day is not about you. (Okay, maybe it's always a little bit about you, but let's let the bride have her day, too.) So don't wear white, off-white, cream or ivory. Also, don't wear anything too glitzy or revealing. The bride should get all the focus. You can have all the attention the other 364 days of the year.
Follow these fashion school tips, and when someone asks if you know what you're wearing to that summer wedding, you can say, "I do."
